Eight happy days spent with the people, returning as a festival for citizens. The grandest festival in Joseon history — a journey a wise king made together with his people. In 2026, following King Jeongjo's royal procession route, we reflect on his intent as recorded in the 'Wonhaeng Eulmyo Jeongni Uigwe'. In 1795 Jeongjo travelled to Suwon Hwaseong to mark the 60th birthday of his mother, Lady Hyegyeong of the Hong clan. His eight-day journey was not simply a king's movement but a historical event in which joyful memories were shared with the people. Jeongjo's care for his people was set down in the Uigwe and widely distributed. In 2026 his spirit is carried forward, and the people's happy memories are recreated as the happy memories of citizens today. The joint reenactment of the royal procession is a festival in which Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Suwon and Hwaseong work together to recreate the original 1795 Hwaseong procession in splendid form.
