Dalseong 100 Pianos

'Dalseong 100 Pianos' has established itself as a signature local cultural offering and as one-of-a-kind content in Korea. It is Korea's leading piano music festival, held at the Samunjin ferry landing in Dalseong-gun, Daegu, the historic place where the first piano in Korea arrived. In March 1900 the piano brought to Samunjin by the American missionary Sidebotham was so unfamiliar a Western instrument that local people called it a 'ghost box'. Yet the musical history that began with a single piano has, a century or so later, become a grand stage where 100 pianos play together. Starting in 2012 as Dalseong 'Baengnyeon Majung' and becoming Dalseong 'Baengnyeon Maji' in 2013, the festival has since spanned genres from classical to jazz, pop and popular music, offering something musically new each year. Performances set against the beautiful Nakdonggang River and the historic scenery of Samunjin make for a special experience where music, nature and history come together. Dalseong 100 Pianos carries the history of Korean music that began with one piano into the music of today, making Samunjin a special musical space where culture and art are alive.
