Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival

Since its launch in 1997, the Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival has led the industrialization and globalization of Jeonju hanji and taken the lead in sharing the excellence of a thousand-year-old paper tradition. It also reinterprets hanji's many functions and values culturally, expressing through the festival the beauty and worth of a material that has been with people for centuries. The annual National Hanji Craft Competition discovers hanji works made with the care and skill of craftspeople from across the country, contributing to the development and wider reach of hanji craft. The National Children's Hanji Art Competition is an open call where children spread their boundless imagination and creativity across hanji, helping future generations encounter Korea's own hanji culture naturally and understand its value and beauty. In this way the Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival goes beyond preserving and developing traditional hanji: by reinterpreting it as contemporary cultural content and creating a place in the culture and arts that many generations can enjoy together, it leads in sharing the value of Jeonju hanji at home and abroad.
