D.FESTA Small Theatre Festival

Now in its 20th year, 'D.FESTA Small Theatre Festival' has worked to lead a better performance culture by tracking changes in Korea's production environment and the direction of the performance market. Its aim is to find new paths for experimental, creative small-theatre work. Since 2016 it has worked to close cultural gaps nationwide rather than only in Seoul's Daehangno, through exchange with Gwangju, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan and other regions; steady efforts to widen its reach through cultural exchange with overseas companies mean that this year it can present visible results of that work, including an Asian co-creation project with Japan's Sapporo and Tokyo, China and Taiwan, and a small theatre festival in Tokyo. Now, to grow into an international as well as a domestic festival, it must expand its biennial regional editions and work toward taking small-theatre festivals global in connection with festivals in other countries. As a start, it hopes that a successful 20th edition of D.FESTA will share outstanding Korean work abroad while serving as a footing for gauging and understanding cultural standards elsewhere.
